Large Regency Pier Glass by Thomas Fentham of London

Description

A large Regency gilt pier glass by Thomas Fentham of London. This is very similar in detail to the glass illustrated in the Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840 page.202, Fig. 341 and has fine carved capitols, a lion mask and crossed ribbons along the cornice. The original gilding has been restored where it had become worn.

There are two labels on the back: the paper label of Thomas Fentham, 136 Strand and a brass label: 'this glass Mary Alsheton gave to her mother'

A pier glass is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be mounted on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. During the British Regency period, these mirrors were executed with classical architectural influences, including pediment tops, fluted columns, and gilded decorative friezes.

Regency pier mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber frames, often pine or lime, coated with gesso and decorated using water gilding with gold leaf. The mirror plates were made using silvered glass, sometimes featuring mercury backing in early nineteenth-century examples.

Authentic Regency mirrors exhibit hand-carved wood structures beneath layers of gesso, natural seams in the gold leafing, and original pine backboards. Period glass often demonstrates slight distortion, oxidisation, or subtle foxing consistent with age.

A pier glass can be positioned above a console table or mantelpiece to anchor a room, placed between floor-to-ceiling windows to enhance natural light, or styled in a hall corridor to create a sense of vertical height.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry feather duster or dry camel-hair brush. Water and liquid chemical cleaners must never be applied to water-gilded surfaces, as they will dissolve the underlying gesso and damage the gold leaf.
