Fine 19th Century French Vitrine, by Francoise Linke

19th century
Description

A fine quality late 19th Century marquetry inlaid bombe fronted French Louis XVI style Vitrine, having its original Breche Violette marble top, wonderful scrolling foliate chiselled gilded ormolu mounts, glazed adjustable shelves within, flower inlaid to the door and sides, raised on elegant out-swept legs, terminating in scrolling ormolu feet. Signed; Francoise Linke. François Linke, the most important French ébéniste of his time. Born in Bohemia in 1855, Linke moved to Paris in 1881 where he established his now-famous workshop and showroom. Linke's superior work spread quickly through France and he soon eclipsed even the finest furniture houses of Paris. Today, Linke is counted among the most important furniture makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his work is dearly coveted by collectors. Linke is celebrated for designing highly innovative furnishings by infusing the Rococo style with the Art Nouveau trends of Paris and this Louis XV style desk exemplifies his highly original style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vitrine is a glass-enclosed display cabinet originating in France, designed specifically to showcase porcelain, silver, and small collectibles while protecting them from dust.

High-end 19th-century French vitrines frequently feature exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood, accented with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and topped with shaped marble slabs.

Authentic pieces display finely hand-chased ormolu mounts, serpentine glass panels, hand-cut marquetry or parquetry veneers, and traditional oak carcass construction underneath decorative veneers.

A Rococo vitrine serves as a focal piece when placed against a neutral wall in a living room, hallway, or dining space, balanced by clean-lined modern art or minimalist seating.

Ormolu should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush without harsh chemicals, while veneered woodwork requires placement away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying or lifting.
