Description

A Pair of 19th Century Tankards.

Each with an outswept rim, decorated to the inner edge with a band of flower heads. The waisted bodies decorated with a slight iridescence, depicting two figures in an oriental garden. One stands holding a long pipe, whilst the other sits filling a planter, in front of a lattice fence, surrounded by trees and flowers. The body of the tankard broadening to a spreading foot rim, with a domed underside. The tankards mounted with scrolled handles, decorated with flower heads as per the rim.

Date circa 1870.

Height 5 3/4 inches, 14.5cm.

Width 5 1/4 inches, 13cm.

These pieces reflected popular fascination with exotic landscapes, gardens, and traditional figures, made accessible to wider markets through transfer-printing techniques.
