An early 20th century American walnut side cabinet in the Arts and Crafts style provides a practical storage solution for a traditional home interior. The warm brown timber is finished with a polished surface, complemented by brass drop handles on the three drawers, brass hinges, and a presentation plaque from Nelson Conservative Club mounted centrally on the top drawer. Two arched lead glazed doors open to reveal a shelved interior, displaying leaded glass panels with patterned motifs. The rectangular top has simple edge mouldings above the upper drawer, and the structure rests upon a solid plinth base. The side cabinet measures 117 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, making it a compact yet functional piece for a study, living room, or hallway. It functions effectively as a display cabinet or general storage unit, keeping items organised behind glass and wooden panels while adding period character to domestic spaces.

FAQs

Cabinets from this period often combined functional domestic storage with subtle decorative embellishments, including arched leaded glass doors, simple geometric panel lines, and rich hardwood construction.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid walnut or walnut veneers layered over stable hardwood frames, fitted with leaded glass panels, brass drawer handles, and traditional dovetail drawer joinery.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit era-appropriate dovetail joints on drawers, period metal hardware with natural patination, and original lead cames holding the decorative glass panels in place.

Place the piece in a dining room, hallway, or living area to curate ceramics and glassware, pairing the dark timber tones against neutral wall finishes and soft modern lighting.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, ensuring glass surfaces are cleaned with non-abrasive solutions that avoid soaking the lead framework.
