Grand Staffordshire Figure of Will Watch C1860

Description

This very GRAND STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE, entitled 'WILL WATCH' to the base in gilt, dates from circa 1860.

WILL WATCH was a legendary smuggler and brigand and was a character portrayed in many a Victorian Melodrama, hence the theatricality of his stance.

The Figure is full of colour and vibrancy. The quality of the decoration and the depth of the colours, especially his pink stockings and paisley breeches, are notable.

This portrayal has every quality that makes a Staffordshire Figure desirable.

A similar Figure is illustrated in A & N Harding's Victorian Staffordshire Figures Vol 1, Page 332, Figure 1222.

The condition is good. There is no restoration.

This grand Victorian Staffordshire earthenware figure of Will Watch dates from circa 1860, depicting the legendary smuggler and brigand seated upon a stump beside a barrel. The piece stands 33 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Styled with a flatback mould, it employs hand-painted enamels with a bright white glaze across the figure, complemented by a vibrant cobalt blue jacket, an orange and white hat, patterned paisley breeches in green and cream, pink stockings, and orange-cuffed boots. The titled base displays the name in gilt lettering, and the front incorporates a brown barrel motif with white hoops. The piece is designed with an English Country House aesthetic and sits well upon a mantelpiece in a home today. The earthenware body displays clean surfaces with no restoration visible.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ceramic sculptures produced predominantly in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century. They were created with press-moulded flat backs to allow them to sit flush against wall surfaces and mantelpieces in Victorian homes.

These figures were produced using multi-piece plaster moulds filled with liquid clay slip or plastic clay. After initial firing, the lead glaze was applied, followed by hand-painted enamel decoration and gilding fired at lower temperatures.
