Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, bespoke wooden boxes were engineered specifically to secure and transport valuable accessories, tiaras, and personal items. These caskets featured fitted trays, velvet or silk linings, and robust lock mechanisms to protect delicate items during travel or home storage.

Victorian artisans predominantly utilised high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut for the exterior casing. Interiors were commonly lined with silk velvet, plush cotton, or leather, while hardware like hinges, locks, and monogram plaques were fashioned from brass.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass locks, and natural wear or patination on the wood and metal components. Interior linings often show age-related fading, and fitted removable trays demonstrate precise hand woodworking.

An antique wooden box functions effectively as a decorative accent on a console table, sideboard, or dressing area. It serves both as a visual focal point and a functional container for organising modern trinkets, keys, or accessories.

Dust the exterior wood regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the original patination. Avoid wet cleaning products on the internal velvet lining, and store the box away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or wood movement.
