Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th to early 19th century, Georgian Neoclassical overmantel mirrors are wide, low-profile wall mirrors designed to fit above architectural chimneypieces. They typically feature classical motifs such as urns, drapery swags, fluted pilasters, and festoons, influenced by Greco-Roman design principles.

These mirrors were commonly framed in softwoods such as pine or deal, finished either with natural polish or gilding. Ornamental features were created using gesso (a mixture of chalk and glue binder) moulded onto wire frameworks or carved directly from wood, surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate signs of construction, including hand-cut joinery, pine backboards, and moulded gesso detail showing minor stress cracking or patina. Original mirror glass from this era often exhibits characteristic oxidisation, slight distortion, or foxing.

Positioning a period overmantel above a fireplace hearth, living room sideboard, or entryway console table anchors the space with historical structure. Combining warm, unpainted pine timber with neutral walls or contemporary furniture creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the timber frame using a soft, dry bristle brush to protect delicate gesso elements, avoiding chemical spray cleaners or excess water. Clean the mirror plate with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, taking care not to allow moisture to seep behind the frame edges.
