Henry Griffith Art Deco Onyx & Lapis Lazuli Box

1920 - 1940
Description

This is a circa 1930's or 1940's Art Deco onyx cigarette box inlaid with lapiz lazuli. It was made by Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd of Tachbrook Road, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. They made a number of similar boxes throughout this period. I found an identical example online (though it does not have the divider inside) which was also made by Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd but was stamped to the underside 'Dunhill Paris, Fabrication England'.

It was originally designed for holding cigarettes, but could be used for any number of purposes in a modern setting.

The hinge is stamped with the marks 'Made In England' and 'H.G&S'. Most of these boxes made by Henry Griffith & Sons Ltd had hallmarked sterling silver mounts. This does not have all the relevant silver hallmarks but the maker's stamp is identical to their silver hallmark. The hinge is gilded.

The thumb piece on the front of the lid would have been set with lapis lazuli which is now missing. The same piece is missing the two screws from the underside. There is a crack to the centre of the underside of the box, and also to the centre of the front. There are a number of nibbles to the corner edges.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
