Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanning emerged in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as an imitation of Asian lacquerwork, utilising spirit-based varnishes over timber framing. Combined with decorative Chinoiserie motifs, this technique decorated seating, cabinets, and tables for country houses and grand interiors.

These pieces generally feature beech or oak framing coated in layered gesso, dark lacquer, and hand-painted gilded decoration. Backrest panels often incorporate woven cane mesh, while seats are finished with drop-in pads or upholstered cushions.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine craquelure across the varnish finish, genuine age wear along hand-carved joints and leg terminals, and detailed hand-painted gilding rather than modern printed transfers. Traditional joinery, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, also signals original construction.

Position a pair of Chinoiserie armchairs symmetrically alongside a console table or fireplace alcove to introduce historic contrast. The dark lacquer finish and intricate gilding complement both minimalist contemporary schemes and traditional layered rooms.

Dust japanned surfaces lightly with a dry microfibre cloth and keep the furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, or high humidity. Avoid chemical sprays, polish, or water, as moisture and solvents can soften varnish and cause gesso flaking.
