Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Scandinavian folk art tobacco box comes from the 1870 period. The piece is made from pollard birch root wood in warm brown tones, displaying a rich natural burl wood grain and a textured organic form on the base. A carved circular lid sits on top, featuring a detailed bird motif within a decorative border and a stepped turned moulding. Visible details include the contrasting smooth circular relief panel against the gnarled roots, warm caramel colour highlights, and fine concentric rings on the cover. Measuring 6.4 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 12.7 cm deep, it is a practical small container. Today, this box makes an interesting accessory for an office desk in a gentleman's library or study, suitable for holding small trinkets or desktop items.

FAQs

Scandinavian birch root objects originate from rural crafting traditions where artisans utilised the dense, twisted grain of root burrs to form durable vessels. These pieces were frequently carved into snuff boxes, tobacco containers, or domestic pots during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These items were carved from pollard birch or birch root burrs, prized for their complex figure and natural strength. The wood was seasoned, carved by hand, and often finished with natural oils or wax to highlight the dense grain patterns.

Authentic period pieces show hand-tool marks, natural shrinkage or minor asymmetry in the joinery, and a deep, oxidised patina from age and handling. The fitted lids were often custom-carved to match the unique organic outline of the root base.

A carved wooden tobacco box functions well as a decorative curio placed on an office desk, coffee table, or bookshelf. Its compact scale and natural wood textures make it suitable for display alongside books, leather goods, or contemporary sculptural objects.

Maintain wood stability by keeping the object away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity fluctuations. Clean gently with a soft dry brush to remove dust from carved recesses, and periodically apply clear beeswax polish to preserve the wood finish.
