Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Italian inlaid table cabinets are portable chests constructed to store small valuables, documents, or curiosities, characterised by engraved bone or ivory marquetry, architectural facades, and classical iconography.

Cabinetmakers used dark woods such as ebonised fruitwood, walnut, or ebony, contrasting with engraved bone, ivory, or lighter wood veneers to form detailed decorative panels, complemented by gilt-bronze mounts and brass handles.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, individual hand-engraved line work on the bone or ivory plaques, cast brass or iron fittings, and natural shrinkage or patination across the wooden frame.

Position the cabinet on a substantial console table, sideboard, or pedestal within a hallway or living space, pairing it with clean contemporary lighting to highlight the detailed architectural panels.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat and sunlight to prevent wood movement and lifting inlays, dusting gently with a dry microcrystalline cloth and applying specialized wax sparingly.
