This Victorian jewellery box is formed from papier-mache and finished in a warm brown lacquer with hand-painted oil paint, gold leaf, and gilded scrollwork. The lid depicts an equestrian hunting scene with figures on horseback and hunting hounds, while the front features ornate gilt scrollwork decoration and a keyhole escutcheon. Measuring 11 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, the rectangular box rests on a flat base. Suitable for display on a sideboard top in an English country house interior, the piece provides secure storage for personal items. The hinged lid opens to reveal interior compartments for organizing jewellery collections. The lacquer displays a reflective surface finish, and the construction demonstrates traditional mid-nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques from the Victorian period.

Victorian papier-mache items were produced using pressed paper pulp or layered sheets hardened with linseed oil and heavy lacquering, often decorated with hand-painted pictorial scenes, gilding, or shell ornamentation.

These decorative caskets were manufactured using laminated paper pulp panels coated in dark asphaltum varnish lacquers, decorated with oil paints, metallic bronzing, and leaf gilding.

Authentic mid-19th-century pieces frequently feature a stamped makers mark on the base or rim, exceptionally crisp oil paint miniatures, dense heat-cured lacquer, and complex gilt scrollwork borders.

Display the casket on a sideboard, dressing table, or console desk to serve as a visual focal point, contrasting its detailed artwork against modern neutral finishes.

Dust gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid moisture, commercial chemical polishes, or solvents that may strip the protective lacquer or damage historical tempera and oil paints.
