This pair of eighteenth-century Louis XV side chairs comes in the Gothic Revival style, constructed from painted wood in a grey finish with upholstered seats covered in multi-coloured striped fabric containing tones of beige, blue, and yellow. Each chair has rectangular backrests decorated with Gothic arch tracery, fluted tapered legs, and carved rosette motifs on the corner blocks, showing surface wear and craquelure across the aged painted surface. Measuring 83 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, with a floor-to-seat height of 41 cm, these compact seats work well in both classic and contemporary interiors as dining or decorative accents.

FAQs

Chairs of this style combine structural French proportions and traditional joinery with Gothic Revival decorative motifs, such as pointed lancet arch tracery in the backrests and fluted architectural legs.

These pieces were typically crafted from European hardwoods such as beech or oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative elements, multi-layered painted finishes, and webbed upholstered seats.

Authentic examples exhibit layered wear to the painted surface revealing timber beneath, crisp hand-carved tracery details, traditional joinery construction, and age-appropriate surface patination.

They can be positioned as accent seating in an entryway flanking a console table, used as desk chairs, or paired with a contemporary dining table to add architectural form and historic texture.

Clean surfaces gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical detergents that degrade historic paint layers, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage.
