An English country Windsor chair dates to the mid 19th century around 1850. Constructed from yew and elm timber, the piece exhibits a warm brown colour with a rich original patina and visible signs of age including a historic repair to the base giving a leaning effect to one side while the back and seat remain solid upright and level. Design details comprise an arched hoop back containing slender spindles and a pierced wheelback splat, a contoured saddle seat, and turned legs connected by an H-stretcher. The chair measures 86 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. Suitable as a functional side chair in rustic farmhouse interiors, the piece serves well around a dining table, beside a desk, or as an accent seat in a living room, hallway, or bedroom.

A Windsor chair is characterised by a solid timber seat into which the chair legs and back spindles are round-tenoned, rather than having the back legs extend continuously upward to form the backrest frame.

Windsor chairs were typically crafted using a combination of regional timbers, frequently featuring a carved elm seat for grain strength alongside steam-bent yew or ash for the back bow and turned spindles.

Authentic 19th-century examples often feature hand-shaped saddle seats, hand-turned legs, wedge-tenon joinery visible on the seat surface, and subtle structural variations resulting from period hand tool woodworking.

A single Windsor chair functions effectively as an accent piece in an entryway, alongside a writing desk, or mixed with modern dining furniture to introduce warmth and historic character.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood splitting or joint loosening.
