This mid-19th century Italian wall mirror exemplifies the Venetian Rococo style with an ornate wooden frame finished in pale sage green paint and gold leaf. The piece displays intricate carved giltwood scrolling leaves along the border, a prominent acanthus leaf crest at the top, and hand-painted polychrome floral decoration across the painted panels. It stands on turned scroll feet and holds mercury glass mirror plate with foxed aging visible across the surface. Measuring 135 cm high by 81 cm wide, the mirror functions practically as a statement wall hanging. It suits placement above a living room mantelpiece or in a grand hallway to reflect light within traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

Venetian painted mirrors emerged during the 18th and 19th centuries in Italy, blending ornate Rococo carving techniques with soft pastel lacquer and hand-painted polychrome florals.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved wood covered with gesso, gold leaf gilding, hand-painted polychrome pigments, and silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the reverse, age-related craquelure on painted gesso surfaces, subtle rubbing to the gilding, and mild oxidisation on the original glass.

Mounting the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantel creates a focal point, contrasting architectural minimalist lines with detailed historic scrollwork.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry feather duster or soft lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners, sprays, or damp cloths on gilding and painted finishes.
