The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated these Mahogany Chippendale Style Armchairs to the 1860s.
The back legs feature a delightful ‘kick’ at the foot and a gentle inside chamfer. These chairs were made by a chair maker who understood ‘proportion’ and who was understanding of Chippendale’s original designs.

Both chairs have marks indicating that they formerly belonged to a larger set of chairs and the stamped initials ‘JH’, possibly referring to James Hopkinson, a well known 19th century Nottinghamshire maker who published his ‘Memoirs of a Victorian Cabinet Maker’ (albeit more a social history of the time, rather than a review of his practice).

Restoration / Condition : These chairs bear the marks of use, commensurate with their age.One arm has an aged repair to the lower part of on arm support and a small patch in the top surface. Both chairs have drop in upholstered seats covered in a dusky patterned purple / brown fabric. The fabric on one chair is very sun bleached (see photos).
