Antique Victorian Carved Rosewood Armchair with Decorative Bird and Floral Upholstery

19th century
Description

An antique Victorian carved rosewood armchair of outstanding quality, dating to circa 1850, displaying exceptional craftsmanship, beautifully shaped proportions and an abundance of finely executed decorative carving. This splendid 19th-century chair combines the richness of its rosewood frame with luxurious upholstery, creating a striking statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The generously proportioned, high, shaped and upholstered back is framed in beautifully figured rosewood, with an elegant carved crest featuring floral decoration. The gracefully sweeping arms terminate in magnificent carved scrolls, while the shaped supports are embellished with deeply carved flowers, foliage and flowing scrollwork, demonstrating the skill and attention to detail associated with fine Victorian cabinetmaking.

The chair stands on elegant cabriole front legs, terminating in beautifully carved rounded feet fitted with porcelain castors. The richly polished rosewood displays attractive grain, warm colouring and a wonderful depth of patina, further enhancing the quality and character of this exceptional antique armchair.

The generously cushioned back, arms and seat are upholstered in a particularly attractive decorative fabric depicting exotic birds, pheasants, flowering branches and luxuriant foliage in soft shades of cream, taupe, dusky pink and plum. The upholstery is complemented by decorative braid trimming, creating a sophisticated contrast against the richly coloured rosewood frame.

Originally designed as a comfortable and prestigious drawing room armchair, this impressive Victorian chair would make a magnificent feature in a sitting room, bedroom, library or elegant entrance hall. Its combination of exceptional carving, generous comfort and striking upholstery also makes it particularly suitable as an occasional chair or statement accent chair within a contemporary interior.

A superb example of Victorian decorative furniture, offering both practical comfort and considerable visual appeal.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition with appropriate age-related wear, consistent with its age and use. The carved rosewood frame displays a beautiful colour and patina, while the decorative upholstery presents extremely well.

This Victorian armchair dates to 1850 and is made from dark brown rosewood with fabric upholstery. The carved frame includes an ornate crest on the high shaped back, sweeping scroll arms, and cabriole front legs fitted with porcelain castors and rounded feet. The patterned upholstery depicts exotic birds, pheasants, and flowering branches in cream, taupe, dusky pink, and plum, finished with decorative braid trimming. The polished timber shows a warm patina and visible grain. The chair measures 91.5 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 88 cm deep. Suitably designed for practical comfort and visual appeal, the armchair works well as a statement accent chair or occasional seating in a sitting room, bedroom, library, or entrance hall within traditional or contemporary interiors.

Victorian armchairs typically feature carved timber frames, curved silhouettes, scroll arms, cabriole or turned legs, and cushioned upholstery reflecting nineteenth-century design tastes.

Craftsmen commonly utilised rich hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut alongside sprung seat bases, horsehair padding, and ornate woven or printed textiles.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved decorative framing, original brass or porcelain castors, traditional joinery techniques, and age-consistent wear to the timber frame.

Placing a single period armchair in a contemporary living room, bedroom alcove, or study creates a focal point that introduces historical depth and textual contrast.

Dust the polished wood frame regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the finish, and vacuum upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment.
