This nineteenth century French wall mirror displays a Napoleon III style constructed from wood and gesso with gold leaf and glass components. The frame exhibits a dark black ebonised finish accented by shimmering gold leaf highlights along the outer stepped edge and inner borders. A rectangular wooden housing incorporates indented corners alongside a central oval aperture fitted with a later mirror plate. Relief decoration in gilt includes an intricate floral pattern surrounding the glass alongside delicate carved motifs on the upper left corner and a fine beaded moulding framing the reflection. Measuring 85 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the piece offers a practical profile for wall mounting in various interior settings. Suitable placement includes hanging above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to add classic French chateau character to the domestic space.

Typically produced during the Second Empire and Napoleon III eras, these mirrors feature dark ebonised wooden frames contrasted with gilded details, often combining geometric outer frames with central oval apertures.

Frames were constructed from woods such as pine, walnut, or pearwood, finished with dark stain to resemble ebony, and decorated with water-gilded gesso mouldings and silvered or mercury glass plates.

Genuine period examples often show wear through the gilding revealing underlying reddish bole or white gesso, subtle desilvering on original glass plates, and hand-planed timber backing boards.

The contrast of black finish and gold leaf allows these pieces to function above a mantlepiece, over a hallway console table, or within a curated gallery wall alongside modern art.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays on gilded gesso, and apply glass cleaner sparingly directly to a cloth rather than the mirror frame.
