Fabulous 18th Century Papered Dowry Box

18th century
Description

A beautiful 18th Century French table trunk, possibly dowry, whose interior and exterior, is lined with decorative domino paper.

This example has a wonderful striking blue and is of larger size than is usually found.

Paper with some losses as always, and hinges of domed top have been replaced. Otherwise in good antique condition.

Domino paper was a handmade paper decorated with geometric or floral motifs, printed using engraved woodblocks.

The patterns were historically painted or stenciled by hand with a brush, often by female artisans called pinceuteuses in the 18th century. Highly fashionable from the 17th to the 19th century, it was used to line boxes, trunks, and the inside of travel chests, or to wallpaper a small space.

This 18th-century French table trunk and dowry box is constructed from pine and covered entirely inside and out with decorative domino paper. The block-printed paper displays a striking blue and brown colour palette featuring a Gothic arch pattern, geometric Greek key borders, and vertical stripes. The domed lid has replaced iron hinges, and the front holds a forged iron latch and handle. The paper shows surface losses consistent with age, revealing the wooden substrate underneath, alongside visible wear and surface marks across the decorated panels. Measuring Height 24cm, Width 46cm, Depth 28cm, this compact antique chest functions as a decorative storage box placed on a table surface or chest of drawers in a living room, bedroom, or hallway.

A dowry box, or brides trunk, was traditionally used in Europe during the 18th century to hold linens and personal items brought into a marriage. These wooden chests were frequently covered externally or lined with decorative block-printed paper featuring regional folk motifs.

Most examples feature a softwood carcass, such as pine or fir, constructed with dovetailed or nailed joints and fitted with forged iron hardware. Hand-printed paper was pasted directly onto the exterior using starch-based glues.

Authentic pieces display hand-forged iron hinges, wire loops, and lock plates alongside natural wood shrinkage and age-appropriate patination. The paper should show evidence of handmade rag content, block-printing irregularities, and surface wear along exposed edges.

Position the chest as an accent piece in a hallway alcove, on a wide console, or at the foot of a bed. Its rich indigo pigments and graphic repeating patterns create visual interest alongside neutral plaster walls and contemporary furnishings.

Store the box in a stable climate away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent paper lifting and colour fading. Clean gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, solvents, or chemical cleaners.
