Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Fischel bentwood bistro chairs from 1920 employs steam-bent wooden frames finished in a dark brown tone. Each dining chair has a spindle backrest and a round wooden seat bearing an embossed shell motif. One chair retains its original label on the underside, and the construction shows gentle surface wear across the timber. Measuring 87 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 40 cm deep with a 47 cm seat height, these compact European bistro seats fit easily around a kitchen table, breakfast nook, or small dining setting. Their rustic farmhouse aesthetic integrates well into both traditional and contemporary interior spaces.

FAQs

Bentwood bistro chairs originated in the mid-nineteenth century, popularized by Michael Thonet. The design utilised a revolutionary steam-bending technique to produce durable, lightweight, and mass-producible wooden seating that became iconic in European cafes and bistros.

Bentwood chairs are predominantly crafted from solid beech wood due to its flexibility when exposed to high-pressure steam. Seats often feature pressed plywood embossed with intricate relief patterns or cane webbing inserted into a molded frame.

Authentic period pieces often feature maker paper labels or heat-stamped brand marks beneath the seat frame, such as Thonet, Mundus, or Fischel. Additionally, examine the underside for bentwood circular support rings and hand-assembled screw joinery.

Bentwood chairs integrate easily alongside contemporary dining tables, kitchen islands, or within breakfast nooks. Their classic curved silhouettes offer visual contrast against sharp modern architectural lines and contemporary materials like glass or marble.

Maintain bentwood seating by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber finish. Avoid placing timber furniture near direct heat sources or in damp environments to prevent wood warping.
