This set of six George III dining chairs dates from around 1800 and is made of mahogany with a rich brown colour and deep patination. Each chair has a curved top rail, reeded sides and back, and a horizontal cross splat centred with a carved bullseye roundel. The drop-in seat pads are upholstered in a neutral textured fabric, and the front supports consist of ring-turned legs. The timbers show visible grain patterns and traditional waxed finishes. Measuring 84 cm high, 48.4 cm wide and 47 cm deep, these seats fit naturally around a dining table in a formal dining room or a traditional kitchen today. They provide a practical seating arrangement for family meals or dinner parties while bringing a strong period character to an interior.

Emerging in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, George III dining chairs are characterised by neoclassical proportions, fine mahogany construction, and understated decorative elements such as carved crossbars and turned legs.

Craftspeople primarily utilised solid mahogany prized for its strength and rich grain, paired with mortise and tenon joinery, webbed seat frames, and natural horsehair or wool upholstery fillings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut joinery, historical wear on the frame undersides, period-appropriate hand carving, and established patination across the mahogany timber.

Positioning a set of mahogany chairs around a contemporary marble or glass dining table creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and keep the chairs away from direct heat sources.
