This rectangular wall mirror dates from the late 18th to early 19th century in an Italian Neoclassical style. The wooden frame displays a dark grey faux marble painted finish on original gesso with a moulded border, a gilded sight edge, and a small metal suspension ring fixed to the top edge. Measuring 105 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the piece combines wood, glass, paint, and gold leaf in a dark grey and gold colour palette. Today, a home decorator hangs this piece above a sideboard or console table in a living room, hallway, or dining space to reflect light and add architectural interest to an interior. The sturdy construction and timeless palette allow it to blend seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary room settings.

Eighteenth-century Italian mirrors often featured handcrafted wooden frames decorated with painted finishes, gilding, or trompe loeil techniques such as faux marble to imitate natural stone.

Frames were predominantly constructed from carved softwoods coated in gesso, finished with specialist paint effects or leaf gilding, and fitted with glass plates.

Authentic pieces display natural surface wear to the paint, hand-cut joinery on the backboard, and characteristic oxidisation or foxing within the mirror glass.

A painted faux marble mirror serves as an architectural accent piece when positioned above a console table, mantelpiece, or side table to add historic texture to contemporary spaces.

Clean the frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or damp sponges that could lift fragile paint, gesso, or leaf gilding.
