Regency Style Ebonised, Parcel-gilt and Caned Armchair

1900 - 1920
Description

A distinctive Regency style armchair with an ebonised frame, parcel-gilt detailing and finely woven cane panels.

The shaped open back is centred by a fan-shaped caned panel beneath a painted neoclassical trophy motif. Sweeping arms terminate in tightly scrolled handrests, supported by turned uprights accented with gilt bands and circular paterae.

The caned seat is framed by a gently bowed front rail, enriched with gilt panels and fine painted line decoration. Square corner blocks feature classical star motifs, above slender tapering front legs and gently swept sabre legs to the rear.

A removable cushion upholstered in gold and olive patterned fabric provides additional comfort while allowing the original caned seat to remain visible when preferred.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency style armchair originates from 1910 and takes the form of an open armchair with an ebonised frame, parcel-gilt detailing, and finely woven cane panels. The shaped open back is centred by a fan-shaped caned panel beneath a painted neoclassical trophy motif, while sweeping arms terminate in tightly scrolled handrests supported by turned uprights accented with gilt bands and circular paterae. The caned seat sits inside a gently bowed front rail enriched with gilt panels and fine painted line decoration, alongside square corner blocks with classical star motifs positioned above slender tapering front legs and gently swept sabre legs to the rear. A removable cushion upholstered in gold and olive patterned fabric provides additional comfort while allowing the original caned seat to remain visible when preferred. The structure measures 86 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 67 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this seating piece works well in a study, drawing room, or hallway as a decorative accent or functional desk chair. The dark ebonised wood finish and gold elements combine to suit formal interior settings.

Regency style furniture, originating in the early 19th century, is defined by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian influences, clean lines, turned legs, and decorative finishes such as ebonising and parcel-gilding.

These chairs were typically constructed from hardwoods such as beech or birch painted black to imitate ebony, featuring woven rattan cane backrests, gold leaf accents, and upholstered cushion seats.

Authentic period pieces showcase hand-woven cane work, original hand-applied gilding or painted decoration, mortise and tenon joinery, and natural age-related wear to the ebonised finish.

An ebonised Regency armchair serves as a contrasting accent piece when styled alongside contemporary neutral upholstery, placed in a hallway corner, or paired with a minimalist desk.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth, keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources to preserve the finish and cane, and avoid chemical polishes or water on gilt surfaces.
