This 19th-century Chinese Canton enamel box and cover is decorated with a hand-painted figural landscape scene on the lid, set against a multicolour palette including blue, green, and red tones, with floral cartouches and blue scrollwork patterns across the body and sides. The piece displays rounded corners, white background cartouches, and visible signs of age including a small chip to one corner of the lid. A maker's signature is located on the inside of the lid and a Chien Lung mark is present on the base. The box measures 7 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, offering a practical decorative container suitable for placement on a coffee table or sideboard in a living room, study, or hallway.

Canton enamel refers to painted enamel on copper objects produced in Guangzhou, China, starting in the 18th century primarily for export to European markets. The technique adapted Western enamelling methods to traditional Chinese decorative motifs and craftsmanship.

These pieces are constructed on a shaped copper sheet foundation that is coated with a white vitreous enamel ground. Artisans then paint detailed imagery onto the surface using metallic mineral pigments before firing the piece in a kiln.

Authentic enamelware features delicate hand-painted brushwork, subtle glaze surface variations, and slight weight from its copper core. Exposed copper edges around the rim and base often show genuine signs of age and mild oxidisation.

Positioning a small enamel box on a coffee table, console table, or stacked on books introduces colour and historic pattern to contemporary surfaces. It pairs seamlessly alongside neutral ceramics or metallic accessories to create balanced visual texture.

Dust the item gently using a soft, dry microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals that may degrade the enamel layer. Keep the object away from high humidity and extreme heat to prevent enamel cracking or copper corrosion.
