19th Century Mahogany Display Cabinet

19th century
Description

A Superb Quality Late 19th Century Mahogany Display Cabinet, Of Imposing Large Proportions, Having Profusely Carved Top Section, Incorporating Foliate, Ribbons, Shell, Cartouche And Quiver, Over Bevelled Glass Doors And Sides Enclosing Adjustable Shelves, Raised On Elegant Stand With Stunning Lion Monopodia Carved Legs And Undertier.

This magnificent cabinet is really quite striking indeed. It dates towards the end of the late 19th century and is very much in keeping stylistically and in terms of its quality with some furniture which we have seen documented as produced for some of the finest houses in the land at the time, by some of the finest cabinet making workshops at the time, including Gillows of Lancaster. However we have unfortunately been unable to locate any signatures, or stamps which would allow us to firmly attribute the piece.

The carving is quite spectacular. Deep, rich and crisp, with such a wide variety of different subjects it has clearly been carried out by an absolute expert.

The overall quality of the mahogany which has been used in the construction is fantastic, dense, rich and almost certainly the most expensive timber which money could buy in the late 19th century.

From a practical perspective this cabinet has adjustable shelves and great viewing. The glazed ends help with viewing of whatever is inside it, as does the fact there is no fussy astragal decoration like many others that you will see.

A quite magnificent piece of furniture this 19th century cabinet would be the absolute making of a huge variety of different spots around the home, or in a hotel lobby, or similar. It really does stand out and would make a fabulous feature item, as well as being hugely functional and practical.

The cabinet has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, well trained, traditional antique furniture restorers and they have ensured that it is absolutely ready for immediate use in whatever its final detination may be.

If you are looking for something spectacular this will certainly not disappoint.

This late 19th-century Victorian display cabinet is constructed from dark brown mahogany with brass hardware and glass panels. The piece is designed in a Victorian Rococo Revival style and stands 246.5 cm high, 157.5 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. The top section features a profusely carved cresting incorporating foliate, ribbons, shell, cartouche, and quiver motifs, complemented by finials at the upper corners. Below, the cabinet incorporates glazed doors and sides with bevelled glass panes enclosing adjustable shelves. The lower support is raised on carved lion mask legs with hairy paw feet and includes an undertier shelf. In a modern interior, the cabinet functions as a display unit for collections, ornaments, or glassware in a spacious reception room, study, or hallway. The deep, rich timber grain and polished finish provide a formal focal point while offering storage and visibility through the glass enclosures. The traditional construction and heavy carving suit period properties and formal spaces requiring large display furniture.

A Victorian mahogany display cabinet typically features dense, dark timber with elaborate hand-carved ornamentation, glazed doors, and internal shelving designed to showcase porcelain and collectibles.

Master craftsmen utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over timber carcasses, incorporating hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and float glass panels.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved relief details showing minor hand-tool irregularities, historical wear around brass keyhole escutcheons, and unpolished backboards with original saw marks.

Place the cabinet as a focal piece against a neutral wall, pairing it with contemporary ceramic vessels or understated glassware inside to contrast historical craftsmanship with minimalist modern design.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry cotton cloth and apply beeswax polish once annually, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
