This nineteenth-century French Napoleon III armchair comes complete with its matching footstool, offering a substantial seating arrangement for any traditional living space or bedroom. Both pieces are upholstered in textured, coarse hessian fabric of a warm tan shade, displaying visible stitching along the channel-quilted backrest and rolled arms. The sturdy frames stand upon turned wooden legs finished in a dark, nearly black tone, which terminate in small metal castors. The armchair measures 97 cm high by 76 cm wide by 79 cm deep, providing ample support with its high back and deep seat. Positioned together in a study, library or drawing room, this set functions well for reading or relaxation while introducing tactile historic character to an interior scheme.

A duchesse brisee is a French two-part chaise longue consisting of an armchair and a matching footstool that fit together to create a continuous reclining seat. Emerging in 18th-century France, this design offered flexible seating for salons and bedrooms.

Traditional French upholstery relies on solid hardwood frames, steel coil springs, jute webbing, animal hair stuffing, and thick hessian base fabrics. Legs were frequently turned or carved from beech or walnut and fitted with metal castors.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically feature hand-carved hardwood frames, traditional wooden dowel joinery, hand-stitched hessian lining, and original wheel castors. Evidence of hand-tied coil springs and natural padding beneath the outer fabric also signals genuine period construction.

Position the two-piece set in a sunlit corner or bedroom alcove to create a dedicated reading area. Pair the neutral upholstery base or finished fabric with a contemporary side table and a minimal floor lamp to balance historical character with clean modern lines.

Keep the piece in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to protect the underlying natural fibres and timber frame. Vacuum gently using a soft brush attachment and address any loose stitching or frame movement through professional conservation.
