This late Victorian desk chair belongs to the nineteenth century and is constructed from mahogany, leather, and iron in a dark brown colour. The broad, shaped backrest and loose seat cushion are upholstered in leather and finished with close-nailed brass studding along the perimeter. Turned uprights support the open arms, which terminate in rounded hand rests above a rounded wooden seat rim. The swivel mechanism sits upon a four-legged mahogany base fitted with metal castors. The item stands 98 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. Suitable for a traditional study or gentleman's library, the swivel action allows movement around a desk workspace. The chair functions as a seating option for a home office, study, or writing room. The quadruped base distributes weight while providing mobility across floor surfaces.

Late Victorian revolving desk chairs emerged in the late 19th century, combining traditional timber joinery with cast iron tilt-and-swivel mechanisms designed for commercial and domestic office use.

These chairs were constructed primarily from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring heavy cast iron adjustment hardware, horsehair upholstery padding, and leather coverings.

Authentic examples feature cast iron revolving and tension mechanisms beneath the seat, original metal castors, hand-cut joinery, and period-correct wear to the timber frame.

A Victorian swivel chair functions well alongside minimalist modern writing desks or industrial tables, introducing historical texture to a home office or study.

Treat the mahogany frame with natural beeswax polish, apply specialised leather conditioner to maintain flexibility, and keep the iron swivel mechanism lubricated with light oil.
