This set of six Georgian country-made dining chairs dates from circa 1790 and is constructed from solid mahogany with a warm brown, nicely patinated timber finish. Each chair features a reeded frame, a carved back rail adorned with central roundels, drop-in seats traditionally upholstered in gold velvet showing some marks and faults, square tapered legs, and H-stretchers. The solid joints show no structural breaks to the back or legs, alongside the odd old repair to the under-stretcher joints. Each chair measures 84 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm. These dining chairs provide practical seating around a main dining table in a traditional or period-inspired home setting.

Georgian country chairs, produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, blend regional craft traditions with formal period styles. They frequently feature robust mahogany construction, simplified carving, reeded uprights, and solid proportions tailored for provincial homes.

Late 18th-century chairs were typically crafted from dense West Indian mahogany, valued for its grain and durability. Joinery relied on mortise and tenon joints, H-stretchers for structural rigidity, and drop-in or stuffed-over seats upholstered in wool, silk, or velvet.

Authentic 18th-century chairs feature hand-sawn timber marks, hand-planed surfaces on the undersides, and original corner blocks or stretcher rails. Additionally, timber inside joint recesses should show natural darkening and age-related oxidisation.

Pairing Georgian mahogany chairs with a minimalist contemporary dining table creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern lines. Complementing the warm wood tones with neutral wall palettes or rich velvet upholstery introduces texture without cluttering the space.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep chairs away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement and joint shrinkage.
