This large mid-Georgian wing armchair belongs to the eighteenth century, presenting an English country house style. The piece uses mahogany and fabric materials, showing a dark brown timber finish on the framework and legs, together with off-white upholstery across the entire seat. Specific physical details include a deep buttoned backrest, flared side wings, rolled armrests, square stretchers connecting the lower frame, turned legs, and early period wooden castors on the feet. General usage wear appears on the surfaces, alongside later upholstery work and an H-stretcher support. The armchair measures 116 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 83 cm deep, with a seat height of 42 cm. Placement in a living room, study, or drawing room provides a comfortable seating option beside a fireplace or reading desk within a traditional home.

Originating in the mid-eighteenth century, Georgian wing armchairs feature high, fully upholstered backs with side wings intended to shield the sitter from draughts and trap heat from open fires. Frames from this period are traditionally constructed from solid mahogany and feature sturdy legs often connected by H-stretchers.

The interior frames were typically built using dense hardwoods such as beech or oak, while visible exposed leg sections utilised imported mahogany. Upholstery fillings traditionally comprised horsehair, jute webbing, and wool wadding, covered in fabrics ranging from damask and velvet to wool or leather.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery, mortise and tenon frame construction, and asymmetry beneath the upholstery. Exposed mahogany elements will often show hand-planing marks, age-related patination, and original brass or wooden castors secured to turned or square section legs.

A classic wingback armchair serves as a focal point in contemporary or traditional interiors when upholstered in neutral linen or wool. Placing the chair beside a modern fireplace, alongside a minimalist side table, or within a dedicated reading Nook balances historical character with modern design elements.

Regularly vacuum the upholstery with a soft brush attachment to prevent dust build-up within deep buttoning. Exposed timber legs should be dusted with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with natural beeswax, keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fabric fading.
