A Mid 19th Century Italian Grand Tour Sorrento Marquetry Box Circa 1860

19th century
Description

A very fine Italian marquetry box dating to circa 1860 and made in the Sorrento region of Italy, where local craftsmen were renowned for making these beautiful fine marquetry objects.

This example is constructed from walnut and veneered in dark olivewood, which has been meticulously inlaid with fine panels worked in mixed coloured veneers.

The sides each have an individual floral display bordered with a fine Tunbridge style banding whilst the top has a similar boarder. It has a unique central panel inlaid with a local musician playing a large traditional wind instrument whilst being accompanied by a very similarly dressed man who is in high spirits dancing to the music.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Sorrento marquetry boxes originated in Sorrento, Italy, during the 19th century, serving as popular Grand Tour souvenirs for aristocrats and wealthy travellers. Local artisans created intricate wood inlays using contrasting veneers to depict local folklore scenes, regional dancers, and classic motifs.

Craftsmen used a variety of native Italian woods including olivewood, walnut, boxwood, and orange wood. These woods were precision-cut and laid into dark or ebonised timber backgrounds to create detailed figurative scenes and geometric borders.

Authentic pieces feature micro-marquetry techniques, hand-cut timber veneers, and classic Grand Tour themes such as tarantella dancers or figures in traditional dress. They often display geometric bandings along the edges and show signs of natural aging in the wood finish.

Display the box on a sideboard top, bookshelf, or desk alongside books and ceramic accents to add warmth and historical texture. The dark ebonised tones contrast well with neutral palettes and contemporary dark academia interiors.

Dust gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and keep the item away from direct sunlight and moisture source to prevent wood warping or veneer lifting. Avoid aggressive chemical polishers, applying a microcrystalline wax sparingly if necessary.
