Victorian Oak Stationery Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely antique oak stationery cabinet dating from the late 19th / early 20th Century. It has a lovely warm patina with a sloped front and brass escutcheon. The doors open out to reveal a series of racks for holding papers and letters with a drawer below. There is also a pen tray and a pair of glass inkwells with hinged lids.

It is in good condition and comes with a working key. There are a few small knocks and marks around the outside, some general signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. There are some chips around the corners of the inkwells but overall they still display well. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian stationery cabinet is a specialised desktop storage container popularised in the late 19th century for organising writing paper, envelopes, pens, and inkwells. They typically feature sloped double doors that open to reveal internal stepped compartments.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid or veneered hardwoods such as English oak, walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Internal fittings frequently incorporated brass hinges, steel lock mechanisms, and leather or velvet linings.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass escutcheons, and period-correct locking mechanisms. The timber demonstrates natural surface oxidation, light wear, and construction techniques characteristic of 19th-century joinery.

Place the cabinet on an office desk, console table, or sideboard to provide functional storage for modern correspondence and small stationery items. The natural timber finish complements both contemporary neutral interiors and traditional study schemes.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish annually to protect the grain and preserve the lustre. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
