FAQs

French bedside tables from the turn of the twentieth century frequently exhibit influences from Neoclassical and Louis XVI styles, featuring geometric lines, narrow profiles, and square tapered legs. Crafted predominantly from rich hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, they incorporate small drawers or cupboards tailored for bedside storage.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid walnut frame components combined with figured walnut veneers over secondary timbers. Hardware generally consists of small brass knob handles, and drawers feature traditional hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetails inside the drawers, irregular wood grain consistent with hand-planed timber, and natural oxidisation on the underside and interior boards. Look for original brass hardware with subtle patina rather than modern uniform polish.

A pair of slim walnut tables can flank a modern upholstered bed frame to add architectural structure and natural wood tones. They also function well as narrow sofa end tables or side cabinets in living areas and hallways.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth along the direction of the grain. To nourish the timber and maintain lustre, apply a high-quality clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicone-based sprays and direct heat sources.
