This Edwardian bracket mantel clock dates from 1900 and comes in warm brown oak and brass with glass elements. The architectural timber case features an arched top with carved swags, fluted columns supporting the arch, and Greek key feet. The arched brass dial includes silvered numerals, two small subsidiary dials, and ornate brass spandrels, protected behind glass. The three-train movement powers a Westminster chime. The clock measures 30 cm wide by 23 cm deep by 25 cm high. In a contemporary home, this timepiece sits on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library, study or living room to add traditional character to the interior. The warm timber tones integrate easily with traditional wooden furniture, bookcases and shelving units. It provides a decorative focal point on a shelf, sideboard or table top while keeping practical time throughout the day.

A mantel or bracket clock is a compact mechanical timekeeper designed to sit on a shelf, mantelpiece, or bracket. Popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries, oak-cased examples often feature classical architectural elements, carved foliage, and ornate brass dials.

These clocks were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, often featuring hand-carved details and fluted columns. The movements were mechanical brass clockworks, accompanied by cast brass spandrels and silvered dial rings.

Authentic pieces feature original brass movements, hand-carved wooden casings with period-appropriate architectural moulding, and detailed brass dials showing natural age and patina. Look for winding holes, subsidiary dials for regulation or chime selection, and robust joinery techniques.

Place the clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or bookshelf to act as a focal point. Combine it with contemporary artwork, clean-lined ceramics, or metallic accents to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern decor.

Keep the wooden casing away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity to prevent warping or splitting. Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
