Napoleonic straw-work boxes are decorative wooden containers crafted by French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars (17931815), featuring split and dyed straw applied in intricate marquetry patterns.

Artisans utilized flattened, bleached, or dyed cereal straw glued onto a wooden substrate, arranging narrow strips to create geometric borders, scrollwork, and figurative motifs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-split straw veneer, natural surface patination, slight variations in grain orientation, and minor edge wear consistent with historic age.

Position the box on a sideboard, desk, or open bookshelf alongside modern ceramics or framed artwork to add textual interest and warm golden tones to the space.

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquids, chemical cleansers, or wax polishes, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
