True Set of 6 Mid 19th Century Farmhouse Kitchen Windsor Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

A Delightful & Charming Set Of 6 Mid 19th Century Matching Ash & Elm Kitchen Farmhouse Windsor Dining Chairs, Having Stunningly Figured Curved Top Rails, Over Turned Upright Supports Flanking Heart & Diamond Pierced Central Splat And Shaped Seats, Raised On Elegant Turned Legs And Stretchers.

These really charming chairs date from around the middle of the 19th century and are a particularly pleasing example of the type, combining good practical proportions with wonderful colour, figuring and all the character one hopes to find in genuine country furniture.

Constructed from a combination of ash and elm, the chairs have developed a superb warm colour and surface over the last 150 years or so. The curved top rails are particularly striking, with some lovely natural figuring running through the timber, whilst the shaped elm seats also display plenty of grain and variation from chair to chair.

The backs are nicely detailed without being overly elaborate, having shaped and pierced central splats flanked by turned upright supports, whilst the elegant turned legs are united by stretchers below. The whole design has a really light feel to it and, despite their relatively simple construction, there is considerably more interest and refinement than one often finds on similar chairs of this type and period.

There are of course plenty of old scuffs, scrapes, knocks and scratches of varying degrees throughout the chairs, but these are all very much historic and simply blend into the overall surface of the chairs now, helping create their exceptional character. It is also worth noting that there are no obvious major structural defects or historic repairs that need to be noted and taken account of.

Finding good sets of genuine 19th century farmhouse chairs is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly six which have remained together and have such a pleasing consistency of colour and design. They would of course be absolutely perfect around an old farmhouse or kitchen table, although equally they could provide a wonderful contrast when placed around something considerably more contemporary.

As with all items which we offer for sale, these chairs have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure they are in the best possible condition before being offered for sale. They are therefore ready to be placed straight into the home.

Mid-19th century Windsor dining chairs are traditional English country seats featuring a solid timber saddle seat with splayed turned legs and a back splat driven directly into mortises in the seat board.

Regional British craftsmen traditionally used a combination of native hardwoods, utilizing elm for the contoured saddle seats, beech or ash for the bent steam elements, and oak or ash for the turned legs.

Authentic 19th-century examples exhibit hand-shaped saddle seats, wedged mortise-and-tenon joints visible on the seat surface, slight asymmetry in hand-turned components, and natural patination from age.

These chairs pair naturally with scrubbed pine or oak dining tables in rustic kitchens, or serve as textural architectural contrast alongside contemporary minimalist dining tables.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood, while maintaining steady indoor humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or joint loosening.
