Rare Pair of Early 18th Century Walnut & Upholstered Georgian Side Chairs

18th century
Description

An Extremely Rare Pair Of Early 18th Century George I Period Walnut And Upholstered Side Chairs, The Swept High Backs And Very Generous Seats With Recent Chenille Type Upholstery, Raised On Bold But Elegant Cabriole Legs To Front & Back, Terminating On Original Turned Pad Feet.

This fabulous pair of chairs are over 300 years old and remain every bit as usable today as they would have been when originally made. Relatively simple and restrained in their design, but at the same time incredibly elegant, they are a really lovely example of good quality early 18th century English furniture.

The scale of the chairs is particularly good, with unusually tall swept backs and very generous seats giving them considerably more presence than many side chairs of the period. Constructed from good quality walnut throughout, they have developed a lovely rich colour and surface over the years, with the inevitable old marks, scuffs and imperfections blending nicely into the overall appearance.

The bold walnut cabriole legs are extremely well shaped and give the chairs a wonderful stance, helping them to stand tall and proud. Particularly unusual is the fact that the cabriole form continues to the rear legs as well as the front, with all four terminating on original turned pad feet.

The chairs have recently been upholstered in a good quality neutral chenille type fabric, which works extremely well against the rich walnut and makes them particularly easy to place. The generous proportions also make them considerably more comfortable and practical than many chairs of this period.

Overall the condition is excellent considering their considerable age and it is increasingly rare to find genuine chairs of this type dating from such an early period, let alone a pair which have remained together. There are of course numerous later 19th and 20th century interpretations of early Georgian chairs available on the market, but these are proper early 18th century examples and retain all of the character, charm and quality one would expect as a result.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this pair of early 18th century chairs have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and trained antique furniture restorers to ensure they are in the best possible condition before being offered for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian side chairs from the early 18th century typically feature high upholstered or carved backs, cabriole legs terminating in pad or claw feet, and solid timber construction, primarily using walnut or mahogany.

Traditional Georgian seating utilised solid walnut or mahogany frames, with upholstery padded using natural materials such as horsehair, wool, and linen, often held in place with brass studs.

Authentic early Georgian chairs display hand-cut joinery, hand-carved cabriole legs, natural age-related patination across the wood grain, and historical mortise-and-tenon frame construction.

Georgian side chairs can be integrated as accent seating in an entryway, paired beside a contemporary console table, or placed on either side of a fireplace to bring architectural character to modern spaces.

Keep walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources, nourish the timber regularly with beeswax polish using a soft cloth, and spot-clean fabric elements with gentle upholstery cleaner.
