Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Sinuous whiplash carving and stylised flowerheads: hallmark design of the Art Nouveau movement.
Construction joints showing slight movement gaps: natural timber shrinkage over many decades.
Hand-cut gouge marks across the diaper patterns: work done before modern machine routing.
Softened high points on the relief carving: gentle wear from a century of dusting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This large wall mirror dates from around 1900 and represents the Art Nouveau style. The piece consists of a carved wooden frame in a warm brown colour with a waxed finish, fitted with rectangular glass. The woodwork displays intricate floral carving, sweeping whiplash curves, and cross-hatching, accented by flowerhead motifs at the centre, top, bottom, and edges. The frame shows some minor wear and repairs, and stands 110.5 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. It hangs securely on a wall to reflect light and add architectural interest to the interior space.

Art Nouveau mirrors from this era feature sinuous, organic shapes inspired by nature, including flowing whiplash curves, floral motifs, and asymmetrical silhouettes prevalent between 1890 and 1910.

Craftsmen typically used dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, mahogany, or beech for hand-carving intricate frame details, paired with silvered plate glass mirrors.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving techniques, age-appropriate wear on the timbers reverse, original hanging hardware, and slight foxing or oxidisation on the silvered glass backing.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace mantel to create a focal point that contrasts organic antique wood textures against clean modern lines.

Dust the carved timber frame regularly with a soft dry cloth, nourish the wood with natural beeswax paste annually, and clean glass carefully without letting liquid seep into the wooden frame borders.
