Fine French Repeating Carriage Clock

1900 - 1920
Description

MAURICE & CO: an attractive and fine quality French CARRIAGE CLOCK, by this prestigious maker. The decorative case (known as “Anglaise Riche”) features an ornate handle; stylised columns and a particularly pretty engraved, pierced and gilded mask to the dial which incorporates various flowers and leaves. The eight-day movement, strikes hours and half-hours on a gong, and repeats the hours at will. It retains its original lever platform escapement and is signed on the backplate: “E.M & Co” and numbered 1417. The dial, with its delightful ‘mask’ is inscribed: Botley & Lewis, who were high-end jewellers based in Reading and who imported quality clocks from Paris. Original blued steel ‘spade’ hands. Perfect working order and guaranteed for at least two years. French, circa 1890-1900.

* Maurice & Co were makers of high quality 19th century French Carriage Clocks, based at 75, Rue Charlot, Paris. They exhibited at the important Paris Exhibition of 1889 ~ and specialised in clocks with decorative cases.
