Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, named after the town of Windsor where they were traded. Designed primarily for country homes and taverns, the style gained popularity due to its durable construction and ergonomic spindle back.

Traditional Windsor chairs feature a solid timber seat into which the turned legs and back spindles are socketed using wedged mortise and tenon joints. The back support and legs are typically crafted from ash, beech, or oak, while the seat is carved from elm.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-turned spindles, natural surface wear around the stretcher rails, and hand-carved shaped seats. Irregularities in spindle symmetry and evidence of traditional joinery methods also indicate period construction.

Windsor chairs complement modern interiors by introducing natural timber textures and classic silhouettes alongside clean-lined dining tables. Mixing wood finishes or placing them in minimalist spaces provides structural contrast and visual interest.

Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of beeswax protect the polish and wood grain. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes to prevent timber movement or joint loosening.
