Set of Six William IV Mahogany Bar Back Dining Chairs, Circa 1830

19th century
Description

A superb set of six William IV mahogany dining chairs, circa 1830, of elegant proportions and displaying a rich, warm colour throughout.

Each chair has a gently curved bar back above an attractively carved and scrolling centre rail, incorporating stylised foliate and shell decoration. The shaped uprights flow down into the seat rails, giving the chairs a particularly graceful profile.

The chairs retain their removable drop-in seats, newly upholstered in a neutral linen-style fabric, and are raised on finely turned and reeded front legs, with elegant sabre legs to the rear.

A particularly attractive and decorative set, combining the restrained classical influence of the William IV period with beautifully executed carved detail. Their relatively open backs also give them a lighter appearance around a dining table than many chairs of the period.

Seat Height 43cm

English, circa 1830.

These chairs would complement our William IV dining table, stock code C3048, particularly well, creating a very handsome period dining setting.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV from 1830 to 1837, this style bridges Regency classical forms and early Victorian solidity, featuring carved foliate motifs and substantial turned or fluted legs.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany valued for its deep grain and stability, paired with drop-in or fixed upholstered seats wrapped in natural fibre padding.

Look for curved crest rails, lotus or acanthus carving on the mid-rails, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, and front legs with distinctive fluting or turned reeding paired with splayed rear legs.

Pair these structured wooden chairs with a minimalist oak or glass dining table to create visual contrast, or re-upholster the seat cushions in contemporary neutral linen for a refreshed look.

Keep mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain twice a year to maintain the finish.
