Antique Victorian Elm & Beech Arts & Crafts Windsor Chair C.1895

19th century
Description

A late 19th century penny-seat Windsor elbow chair, the faceted crest rail enclosing a woven panel set over turned spindles leading to a deeply contoured solid elm penny saddle seat flanked by sweeping out-swept beech arms, all raised on turned splayed beech legs.

Combining classic socketed penny-seat Windsor construction with late 19th-century Arts & Crafts stylistic influences, its lower seat height and compact footprint make it ideal as a fireside companion or bedroom accent chair.

Very good antique condition, showing some surface wear and an authentic, hand-worn patina consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1895.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Arts and Crafts Windsor chair combines the regional tradition of Windsor chairmakingcharacterised by turned legs and spindles socketed directly into a solid wooden seatwith the hand-crafted aesthetic and decorative details of the Arts and Crafts movement, such as patterned upholstery or carved crest rails.

Traditional English Windsor chairs frequently utilise a combination of woods chosen for their specific structural properties: solid elm for the contoured saddle seat due to its resistance to splitting, bent yew or ash for the steam-bent components, and turned beech for the spindles and legs.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of hand-tooling, wedged tenon joinery where the legs pass through the seat, natural wear to the finish on footrests and arm supports, and genuine oxidisation on the timber underside.

An antique Windsor armchair works well as a standalone accent piece in a contemporary living room, placed alongside a desk in a home office, or paired with a modern dining table to create an eclectic mix of eras.

Preserve the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
