Description:

This is a fine quality antique English single Georgian mahogany dining chair, in the style of the Chippendale period, with a newly upholstered seat, in excellent condition, circa 1830. Also useful as an occasional or office / desk chair around the home.

This single Georgian chair is constructed of top-quality solid mahogany and features a shaped top rail, with a finely executed pierced central fretwork back splat. The back splat is flanked by vertical moulded rails, securing the seat frame, which displays twin-mouldings.

Dimensions:

Height = 94cm / 37” / 3ft 1”

Width = 54cm / 21¼” / 1ft 9¼”

Depth = 52cm / 20½” / 1ft 8½”

Seat Height (Centre) = 51cm / 20⅛” / 1ft 8⅛”

Seat Width = 51cm / 20⅛” / 1ft 8⅛”

Seat Depth = 40cm / 15¾” / 1ft 3¾”

Back Height = 50cm / 19¾” / 1ft 7¾”

This antique single mahogany dining chair has been cleaned and French polished and all loose joints have been glued in our workshop; therefore, this single chair is solid in joint. The seat has been newly upholstered in top quality taupe colour structured cotton upholstery, finished with traditional hessian backing to the underside. The seat is therefore in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seat is very comfortable and provides ample support (you do not sink into the seat). If you do not like the upholstery, we will recover the seat in a fabric or leather of your choice (we charge £30 labour per seat).

As the Georgian dining chair retains its original polish, the frame boasts a lovely original colour and patination. It is solid in joint (not loose or wobbly) and is ready to use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style seating from the Georgian period typically features dense mahogany wood, intricate hand-carved pierced back splats, yoke-shaped top rails, and sturdy square or cabriole legs. These designs balanced structural strength with classical ornamental motifs popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Georgian furniture makers predominantly utilized Cuban or West Indian mahogany joined with traditional mortise and tenon woodwork. The frames often incorporate H-stretchers for structural stability, alongside drop-in or stuffed seats covered in woven wool, silk, or leather.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planing, irregular saw marks on unexposed surfaces, and hand-carved details with slight asymmetrical variances. Additionally, genuine mahogany develops a deep patina over time, and original joints will display natural shrinkage consistent with age.

A single antique mahogany chair functions effectively as a functional desk seat in a modern study or as an accent piece in a hallway. It can also be paired with modern dining tables to create an eclectic, curated aesthetic.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fabric fading.
