Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late seventeenth century during the joint reign of William III and Mary II, chinoiserie furniture reflected European fascination with East Asian decorative arts. Craftsmen developed japanning, a European technique mimicking Asian lacquerwork using spirit varnishes and pigment to depict natural foliage, figures, and architectural motifs.

The main carcase of these pieces was typically constructed from timber such as pine or oak, overlaid with built-up layers of varnish and resin. Gilded raised decoration was executed using gesso and gold leaf, while stands were heavily carved from oak or pine and finished with water gilding, complemented by brass mounts.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-engraved brass strap hinges, and period-correct lockplates. The underside of the giltwood stand will show natural age-related shrinkage lines and dark bole beneath worn gilding, alongside hand-carved tool marks on the timber framework.

Designers position these cabinets as focal accent pieces against neutral, contemporary walls to emphasize their dramatic black and gold palette. Pairing dark japanned surfaces with modern lighting or placing the cabinet in an entryway creates visual contrast between classic historic decorative arts and minimalist architecture.

Maintain stable environmental humidity levels between 40% and 55% to prevent the timber carcase from expanding or cracking the delicate lacquer surface. Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural feather duster, avoiding commercial aerosol polishes, solvents, or water.
