A large and fine quality late Regency over mantle mirror.

The triple panel main frame with four fluted Corinthian columns adorned with crossed ribbons and supporting the upper deeply reeded banded frieze interspersed with carved roundels.

The central panel with arched mirror pediment with beaded edge over egg and dart carved border.

The plinth with beaded border interspersed with carved roundels.

The mirror plate is early and possibly original with a very good and deep reflection and a couple of tiny freckles consistent with age.

This is beautiful large and high quality mirror frame in excellent original condition, carved by hand in c. 1830, and retaining the original boarded back.

Originating in early 19th-century Britain, Regency overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above fireplace mantels. Characterised by classical proportions, gilding, and architectural elements like reeded pilasters or pediments, they often feature multi-panel mirror plate configurations.

These mirrors were constructed with a pine or oak wooden core covered in gesso and overlaid with gold leaf using water gilding or oil gilding techniques. Original glass plates were either silvered mercury glass or early float glass backed with wooden panels.

Authentic period mirrors feature hand-carved wood beneath the gesso, hand-planed backing boards, square-headed or handmade nails, and slight distress or oxidisation to the gold leaf and glass silvering. Modern reproductions usually rely on cast resin, uniform spray gilding, and modern particle board backings.

Position the mirror directly above a chimney breast to anchor a living room or drawing room. The warm gold tone and classic proportions balance both traditional period schemes and modern minimalist spaces by creating depth and reflecting natural light.
