A Quartet of 19th Century Beech and Rush-seated 'Sussex' Chairs

19th century
For Sale by Jeckyll & Co
Description

An elegant model...and a set!

The bobbins are not the Webb/Morris design but I've had this model before and was previously able to compare to a chair designed by Philip Webb for Morris & Co. and in all other respects they were identical.

The frames and rush seats are in good order. The colour of the frames are mottled in places with both green and darker tones. One chair missing two fillets of wood around the rush seat.

Reliable transport at cost price throughout the UK is easy to arrange.

Declaration

Jeckyll & Co has dated these Antique Sussex Rush Chairs to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sussex chairs originated as traditional English country seating before being adapted and produced in the mid-nineteenth century, becoming a core component of the Arts and Crafts design movement.

These chairs are typically constructed from turned hardwoods such as beech or ash, paired with hand-woven natural rush seats and timber stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic period examples feature light turned-spindle backrests, hand-turned frame components, natural surface patination, and traditional hand-woven rush seating.

Sussex chairs can be grouped around minimalist dining tables, arranged in country kitchens, or utilised as individual accent seating in hallways and living spaces.

Maintain timber frames by dusting with a dry cloth and keep rush seating intact by avoiding excessive moisture, direct heat sources, and heavy direct impacts.
