This novelty French vesta box dates from the 1920 period in a 19th Century French style. The rectangular piece comprises a chased brass casing with a spring-hinged lid and a match strike on the spine, paired with an enamelled top panel under glass. The visible colour palette incorporates muted brass tones alongside a multicolour painted scene featuring a blue-attired woman leaning on a rustic fence, a man in a black jacket fishing by a blue river under a pale sky, and white French text running along the base. Notable signs of age include slight surface wear to the metal and paint. Measuring 45mm, this small box suits placement on an office desk in a gentleman's library setting to store matches or small desk accessories. The spring lid operates smoothly, and the interior conceals an additional risque image.

Vesta cases, also known as match safes, became popular during the nineteenth century following the invention of friction matches. Designed to keep matches dry and prevent accidental ignition in pockets, these small containers were produced in a wide variety of materials, ranging from brass and silver to decorative enamelled metal.

Vesta boxes were typically constructed from durable metals such as brass, nickel, sterling silver, or plated base metals. Decorative examples often featured vitreous enamel panels, engine-turned chasing, or hand-painted narrative scenes on the exterior.

Authentic period vesta cases usually display evidence of hand-finishing, proper period hallmarks or maker marks, natural metal patination, and functional striker strips on the base or side. Hand-painted enamelled examples show fine brushwork and slight surface irregularities consistent with historical kiln-firing techniques.

Small antique vesta boxes serve as excellent accent items when placed on an office desk, styled on a decorative tray, or arranged within a bookshelf vignette alongside leather-bound books and vintage desktop accessories.

Clean enamelled brass items by wiping them gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical polishes, abrasive materials, or immersing the object in water, as moisture can damage the enamel bond or underlying metal fitment.
