Antique Victorian Set of 4 Ebonised & Gilt Dining Chairs

19th century
Description

A decorative set of four Victorian ebonised and gilt dining chairs dating to circa 1880, with elegant spindle backs, shaped top rails and finely turned tapering legs.

The chairs have an attractive architectural form, with gently shaped top rails decorated with gilt highlights and carved detailing. The backs feature slender turned spindles, while the uprights are finished with small carved finials and further gilt decoration. The ebonised finish contrasts particularly well with the aged gilt highlights, which have developed a lovely mellow appearance.

Each chair has a generously upholstered seat, currently covered in a warm terracotta patterned fabric. The upholstery is serviceable but shows signs of age and use, and the chairs would also provide an excellent opportunity to introduce a fabric to suit a particular interior.

We are able to offer a professional reupholstery service at a very reasonable cost. Customers are welcome to select a fabric from our extensive supplier ranges or provide a fabric of their own choice. We can also offer AquaClean fabrics, an excellent practical option for dining chairs. AquaClean technology incorporates a specialist treatment into the fabric fibres, allowing many everyday stains to be cleaned using water alone. It is particularly useful for dining areas and family homes where practicality is important without compromising on the appearance of the upholstery.

Although ideal as a set of four dining chairs around a smaller dining or breakfast table, their decorative design also makes them very versatile. They could be used individually as bedroom or dressing-table chairs, as occasional seating in a drawing room, hallway or study, or placed as a pair either side of a console or small occasional table.

Condition report: In good antique condition with age-related wear throughout. There is rubbing and loss to areas of the ebonised and gilt decoration, giving the chairs an attractive aged character. The existing upholstery shows signs of use and can be retained or professionally replaced if preferred. Please refer to the photographs for close-up details of the finish and upholstery.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian ebonised furniture refers to wooden items treated with dark dyes or stains to replicate the dense appearance of ebony wood. Popularised in the nineteenth century during the Aesthetic Movement, this style often incorporates gilded accents, turned spindles, and structural detailing.

Craftsmen typically constructed these chairs from native European hardwoods such as beech or walnut before applying a black ebonising finish. Decorative elements frequently included applied gold leaf or metallic paint alongside horsehair-stuffed upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces exhibit subtle wear on raised edges and contact points where the dark finish thins to reveal the underlying pale timber. Period construction methods, turned leg profiles, traditional corner blocking, and hand-applied gilding also indicate age.

Dark ebonised chairs provide strong visual contrast when placed alongside modern pale oak tables or set against neutral walls. Their vertical spindles and architectural silhouettes work well in contemporary dining spaces, hallways, or dressing rooms.

Dust ebonised frames regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the finish. Avoid liquid cleaners or harsh chemical solvents on gilded areas, and apply a light coat of clear furniture wax sparingly to protect the timber.
