This Victorian games box takes the form of a rectangular wooden casket finished in a rich, warm brown burr walnut veneer with natural figuring and polish. The hinged lid features a sweeping domed profile mounted with ornate polished brass scrollwork framing three playing cards depicted in brass and enamel, displaying red hearts alongside black spades and clubs, complemented by a matching brass keyhole escutcheon on the front edge. Measuring 20 cm in length, 12.5 cm in width, and 9 cm in height, the interior contains three fitted compartments designed to hold playing cards and poker dice. This tabletop piece sits well upon a gentleman's library sideboard, study desk, or living room accent table for storing card game accessories while providing a decorative focal point for an interior scheme.

FAQs

During the late nineteenth century, parlour games and card playing became popular social pastimes, prompting makers to produce decorative desktop caskets designed specifically to store playing cards, dice, and counters.

Antique games boxes were frequently crafted from figure-rich timbers such as burr walnut, rosewood, or mahogany, decorated with polished brass mounts, pierced metalwork, and fabric interiors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-fitted brass strapwork, period-appropriate lock escutcheons, natural aged patina across the timber, and traditional mortise or dovetail joinery.

This type of box functions as a decorative accent when placed on a coffee table, bookshelf, or home office desk, bringing warmth and vintage character to curated rooms.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid drying or cracking, and nourish the polished surface periodically using a high-quality beeswax polish.
