Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer technique where metallic powders, such as gold or silver, are sprinkled onto wet urushi lacquer to create intricate decorative patterns. Popularised throughout the Edo and Meiji periods, these techniques were applied to objects ranging from small storage vessels to writing desks.

Traditional Japanese lacquerware features a wooden core coated in multiple thin layers of refined sap from the urushi tree. The surface decoration incorporates metallic powders, mineral pigments, and occasionally mother-of-pearl or charcoal powder details.

Authentic Meiji-period pieces feature precise metallic powder application, smooth multi-layered lacquer surfaces, and subtle signs of natural wear along base edges. Maker marks, shop seals, or original timber storage boxes (tomobako) from historical Tokyo or Kyoto purveyors further confirm period authenticity.

A Japanese lacquer storage box functions as a refined accent piece when displayed on a sideboard top, desk, or open shelving unit. Its dark polished finish and metallic artwork create contrast when positioned alongside natural timber, stone, or woven textiles.

Japanese lacquerware must be protected from direct sunlight, extreme dry heat, and sudden humidity changes to prevent timber warping and surface cracking. Dust the object gently using a dry microfibre cloth without applying water, solvents, or commercial waxes.
