Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Chinese Export armchair is constructed from dark black hardwood and comes in a 89 cm high, 59 cm wide, and 52 cm deep profile. The elaborate high-relief carving covers the entire wooden frame, showing dragon head armrests, an openwork back splat depicting further dragon motifs, and cabriole legs. A newly upholstered squab cushion in a rich red velvet rests upon the solid wooden seat base. Suiting a gentleman's library or a study interior, this armchair provides an assertive focal point. The seating combines dark carved timber surfaces with soft velvet texturing, offering both decorative presence and functional seating in a traditional or eclectic home setting today.

FAQs

Late Qing dynasty and 19th-century Chinese export furniture frequently features deeply carved hardwood depicting mythological motifs such as dragons, high-relief decorative panelwork, and curved cabriole-style legs.

These chairs were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods, such as zitan, hongmu, or ebony, chosen for their density and ability to hold precise structural carving.

Authentic period pieces display traditional hand-cut mortise-and-tenon joinery, subtle variations in hand-carved elements, natural surface oxidation, and substantial weight due to dense native timbers.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece in a study, hallway, or reading nook, pairing the dark carved wood with neutral wall tones to highlight its sculptural silhouette.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, dusting regularly with a dry soft cloth and applying beeswax sparingly along the carved details.
